Making Money on The Internet - 60 Day Challenge Hub Log

76

By IzzyM

The goal of the 60 day challenge is making money on the internet through writing 30 hubs in 30 days, then spending the next 30 days promoting the newly written hubs so that they gain popularity, and thus traffic.

Many new writers have no idea how to go about promoting hubs, and taking part in a challenge can go a long way towards teaching writers the basic of SEO and how to attain search engine rankings, which in turn send more search engine traffic to your hubs.

Hubpages is an amazing platform to write on. Writing here gives your articles instant recognition, as each article carries the extensive weight of the Hubpages domain. If you've ever attempted to set up a website from scratch, you will know how difficult it is to get recognition from the search engines. Getting to page 1 of Google, which is considered by many to be the most important of the search engines, is a distant dream, and you may have to wait many years before your site has built up enough recognition to get there, if ever, no matter how well written your website is.

60 Day Challenge Group Therapy

The 60 day challenge is a group challenge, and we are all there to help and support one another. A bit like Weight Watchers or any other form of group therapy, the encouragement a participant receives from the other members is what motivates him and keeps him going. Writing a hub a day, on a well researched topic, is a hard slog for anyone, especially those participants who hold down a full time job as well. The desire for making money aspect sometimes isn't enough. There is always tomorrow when life gets in the way.

Taking part in a 60 day challenge is a great way of making money on the internet, and an extremely useful use of a writer's time.

BUt enough of all this chat!

My reasons for taking part in the 60 day challenge are to increase my adsense earnings, and learn how to effectively promote hubs.

My motivation is quite simply to earn money. A job I thought I was going to get in real life fell through and I have no other form of income. I love writing, so to be able to write and earn money at the same time is a dream come true for me.

It was only 2 to 3 years ago I spent hours researching all the plants I now grow in a warm climate, and it is fascinating to realise that my articles are now the ones that people searching the internet are finding!

Stats

This is my profile stats. You can see where traffic peaked when one of my hubs ws featured on Hubpages front page a while back. Unfortunately that traffic never converted to search engine traffic.

You can also see the recent rise thanks to adding on page optimization to all my hubs through the guidance of Market Samurai.

Hopefully, by the end of this challenge I'll be able to show a new stats chart showing significant improvement.

Hub # 1

This is my first hub of the challenge. Buy a Baby Swimsuit Online.

I have the others picked out, and was working on one tonight. I'd put several hours of work into it (it needn't have taken that long but my computer kept freezing and the internet connection kept dropping), but I wasn't worried because Hubpages auto-save your work as you go along.

Then my computer crashed, and when I rebooted, I discovered I had lost ALL of my work! Posted about it on the forums, and tried to re-write the work I had lost. Very soon however, I went offline (actually didn't have much choice as the computer was by now freezing even worse than before). Decided I must have a virus, despite Windows firewall and AVG protecting it, or if not a virus then spyware or a worm. It's in my head my friend Garfield telling me that other night that another friend keeps getting booted out of her internet while she is online, and how she then can't get back in with a message saying that someone is already using her connection. No-one it seems knows her password. The only other thing that can do that is a Trojan Horse. So-called because they are sneaky little files that sneak into your computer and allow a remote user to then take control. When he is online, he can steal all your passwords, email accounts, bank details, anything else you would use online.

And something is rumbling my computer. So I download the update for anti-spyware (comp freezes again). Reboot and don't go online. Set program to scan for nasty files. Play a game of Spider Solitaire to pass the time.Another freeze. Booted out of my game. Spider solitaire.exe is compromised. Sat there for an hour watching Anti-spyware doing its job.

Had a total of 807 adware files on my computer. These are not so much harmful, as sneaky. Someone is watching my every move. Recording every site I go to. Collecting data to sell to marketers.

They are all dead now, and computer is running well. Spyware doesn't crash your computer, but an overfull browser cache will! Note to self, clear browser cache tomorrow.

Oh and I shut off the Hubpage I'd been working on, and when I reopened, all my work is back! Including that half I re-did. Will sort it out tomorrow.

  32. Plumbago Auriculata Plumbago auriculata is a flowering shrub that was first discovered growing in South Africa, and has since spread to warm climates in the rest of the world. Commonly known as Cape Leadwort, plumbago is characterised by small green leaves, a spreading habit and bunches of pale sky blue flowers on the growth tips. This is an exceptionally beautiful plant that with its climbing habit lends itself to trailing over rocky embankments or covering an otherwise ugly feature in the garden. Flowering all summer long, plumbago is drought-resistant once established and very easy to care for.
  33. Buy a Clear Blue Pregnancy Test Clearblue are the market leaders in home pregnancy testing. Their results are 99% accurate and can detect a pregnancy as early as 7 days before your period is due. However, this early the result is not conclusive because it measures the levels of HCG in your body, which is a hormone secreted by the baby’s placenta, and the amount released varies from woman to woman. HCG levels also double daily in early pregnancy, so if your Clearblue test returns a negative result, it is best to repeat the test in another couple of days.
  34. The Butterfly Bush While several plant species have the name, the butterfly bush, by far the best known is Buddleia davidii. Originally from China, the butterfly bush is now grown the world over, and in many countries has become an invasive species. Windborne seeds sprout in any vacant untended land, including railways embankments and vacant building sites. Butterflies are attracted to the nectar in the sprays of flowers that grow in long racemes in the summer months. Not only butterflies, but many beneficial insects, and so the gardener always welcomes the butterfly bush in the garden.
  35. Grow Catnip Catnip, or to use its botanical name, nepeta cataria, is very easy to grow in your garden or on a pot on your patio. The problem is keeping it alive if your cat happens to be one of the 75% of cats who are driven wild by catnip. The active ingredient in catnip is a substance called nepetalactone which as well as sending cats high, is attractive to bees and other beneficial insects in your garden, while at the same time being a repellent to many pests. This could make the catnip a good companion plant for the vegetable border.
  36. Catnip Plant. The catnip plant (nepeta cataria) grows as an invasive weed species in many countries. A hardy plant, it readily grows on waste ground and in poor soil where other plants might struggle. Drought-resistant and sun-loving, the catnip plant, originally from the Mediterranean area has spread throughout the world. It is highly attractive to cats through their highly developed olfactory senses. It drives them wild with desire. Watching a cat's reaction to the catnip plant has increased its popularity, but in truth the catnip plant has many uses in folk medicine and is not just for cats.
  37. Top 5 Brad Pitt Movies with Video Clips Brad Pitt has made more than 40 movies in his very successful career as a Hollywood actor, and in this article I have picked out what could possible be his 5 best hit movies with a little bit about the plot of each one, plus a video clip of the movie. A versatile actor, Brad Pitt has taken on roles that can make you laugh or cry, as well as action-packed thrillers that will hold you on the edge of your seat. With his boyish good looks, he has never been short of female attention, and is now happily married to iconic Hollywood beauty, Angelina Jolie.

End of 60 days

It is now 60 days since the challenge began. While hub promotion is ongoing, I'm happy to divulge to you now that my new hubs written especially for the 60 day challenge, have brought me in a total of $150 between Amazon sales and Adsense, and have received almost 22,000 views.

P.S. It is probably quite a bit more than that, seeing as I have just figured out where the clicks I've been getting but are not showing up on my adsense account are coming from.

How about from my newer hubs (which include some 60dc2 hubs)? I have, at the point of writing this, 245 hubs. The channels in Adsense that let you see what each hub is doing is full and stops at 200. I have not yet learned to use Google Analytics.

I'd replied already but my internet connection dropped and the comment disappeared into cyberspace!

I thought sunforged said to use the tag 'online writing goals' so as not to confuse this challenge with the last. I have added that tag anyway, thanks

Hello Izzy I too have signed up for the 60 day challenge and hope to learn and earn lol. I was reading the official forum for this and I am a bit confused too. I am pretty sure that sunforged has stated in the last reply he entered that we are NOT to put the words 60 day challenge in our tags section. I have asked for clarification on this but have removed this tag from my hub. He says he will explain later. I think add the tag 'online writing goals' just in case as it can not do any harm.

I too was made redundant last year from my job and plan to earn a good living from my writing. That's why I am doing the challenge, I have to learn all there is to know from other hubbers about getting my hubs out there on the internet and read. lol

Your other hubs look very interesting and I intend to have a good read of them later tonight.

Cheers Viking, and I wish you all the very best in not only the challenge, but in making a new career in writing online pay! I've got the online writing goal tag in, but I didn't know about not using the words 60 day challenge because that is a keyword, and a search term (not highly searched, but a search term nonetheless). If you hear anything different overnight please come back and tell me so I can sort it in the morning (its 2am here)

Everything we learn on here is so valuable. Thanks for putting it so concisely and giving us references to refer to as well. I have bookmarked them and will need to study in depth. I think I fail on the promotion part or at least I'm not promoting the 'best' way so will be curious to see what I have missed! Thanks for the great information.

Oh go on Nell, you can do it! Maybe you can manage two one day and then none the next. It'll be a brilliant learning experience!

@akirchner, yes keep an eye on the threads and everything and you should learn how to promote at the same time as us. Sorry you're not joining us, you'd make a great team memeber :)

Izzy - I've seen you around in the forums. You always seem to have a good answer. I'm really looking forward to working with you and getting to know you a little better. I'm sure you'll accomplish the goals you have set. Can't wait to see the success!

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM Hub Author 21 months ago

Here's to our success!

I'm really looking forward to learning the promotion aspect of everything. I think we could all do a lot better if we do that right. Hubpages is an incredibly powerful platform and we are writers first and foremost, so learning how to promote is the missing link that can catapult our work on to the front pages, even in highly competitive fields.

@Drej - This is a great place for a holiday, but living here is not so easy.

Sorry to hear about your job and hopefully you can gain more knowledge through the challenge, so as to make up for other things. It should be really interesting and fun. Good luck with your 60 day challenge, Izzy! I seriously don't have the time, unfortunately, to manage a challenge right now, but I must look into these challenges when I get a chance, perhaps the next one? Not sure where to look for these challenges though, to sign up. Perhaps I'll browse around now, and find it. I guess I'll start with those links you provide at the bottom of your hub!

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM Hub Author 21 months ago

This challenge was just talked about in the forums, then Sunforged arranged it through a question you had to answer "make a hub about it" just like you do with Hubmob. Well I think a lot of people from the the first challenge helped out in organising it. I don't know if it is still open to contestants - it might be. But if you don't have time you don't have time- maybe next time :)

Dotty use these sites I mentioned to backlink to, especially the first 5 or so, and don't forget Facebook and Twitter. Of course you don't have to backlink at all. Your work will still get found, it just takes a little longer :)

Ahh I have just looked and you are a poet. I think it is much harder to rank for poems because google looks for the keywords in your text and poems don't usually have keywords as such, do they?

You could always write a poem about a big football team or a Rolex watch or something that people search for?

Maybe I am a bit dim but what was the outcome of the 60dc

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM Hub Author 20 months ago

Good luck Tom, traffic grows slowly unless you get lucky and write one that is instantly popular (I never did!).

@Noel, we've just finished the first 30 days and are about to enter the promotional phase. We were meant to write 30 hubs but I got a bit carried away and wrote 37!

This looks great. i think if you know how to promote you hub on search engine then you can earn good amount of money from them. Just try to submit some reader friendly articles. the latest news is most effective in readers.

Hi, IzzyM. Thanks for the list of backlinking sites. I often see backlinking sites mentioned here and there, but now when I am looking for a list, it was hard to find one. Do you not use Digg, Xomba, or StumbleUpon?

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM Hub Author 18 months ago

Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon want you to be part of their community - they are not really happy when people backlink but don't take interact with others there, or do some page hopping. I've found a lot of their hopping pages are videos and I am on a limited bandwidth allowance per month and don't want to waste it reading someone's videos.

So I stick to the list above, and yes that includes Xomba :)

That challenge is in fact quite challenging.

I'm thinking about doing it without the 'challenge' assignment, would be very productive undertaking if actually accomplished :)

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM Hub Author 5 months ago

One or two of the backlinking sites above no longer exist, and two more of them no longer accept short articles with a link - specifically shetoldme (which is now a paid site) and xomba. Pity they were great for backlinks! I find tipdrop excellent and you do get a proper dofollow backlink from them that shows up in yahoo (well before they closed).
