Google Chrome Error Message - This Web Page is Not Available

By

Is it only me, or does anyone else think the Google Chrome error message This web Page is Not Available could be improved upon?

I mean, right underneath the message is another which says “The web page at http://www.glasgowtaxis.co.uk/ (which was the page I was working on) might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.”

That always makes me feel like the one who has been left out. The page has moved, right in the middle of me using it, and everyone else has gone to the party and left me behind.

Of course it hasn’t moved at all. The little task bar icon down the bottom tells me that my internet connection has dropped, yet again, but I am still left feeling somehow excluded.

Why doesn’t it just say “The web page might be temporarily down, or your connection might have dropped. Check your taskbar icon”. I mean, that makes more sense. And yes while it is possible it has moved to a new web address, just as I was perusing it, it is still a lot more likely that my connection just dropped, yet there is no mention of this?

Maybe it should say, in bold letters, “check your internet connection, ya daftie!

Then underneath that should be another message saying, "if you have checked that you are in fact still online", then “the web page you are trying to access might be temporarily down or it may have moved to a new web address”.

Which would make me feel a bit better, I think. Except I am now online and everyone else has in fact gone to the party, leaving me behind.

Beneath the top message is another, saying “reload this web page later” which helpfully includes a link directly to the web page I was trying to access.

But if they have moved to a new address that will be a complete waste of time, won’t it? I’ll get the same message to infinity, unless someone has re-directed the url or whatever it is these clever internet people do when they move websites.

The message should say “If you have checked that you are actually online, and do that by clicking HERE (with ‘here’ including a link to a site that never moves like Microsoft.com or Google.com) and you know for a fact that the site you are trying to access hasn’t moved (haha they went to the party without you!), then the likelihood is that the site is actually down and may come back online later”.

Now that would make more sense even if now it is quite a big box that opens to incorporate all those words.

How to fix the error message This Web Page is Not Available.

  • Make sure you are online!
  • If you can access the web in another browser ie Firefox or IE, then have a look at the possible fixes for Chrome here.
  • First of all, check that your firewall is configured to allow Chrome through.
  • If you use third party parental controls software, some of them revert to default when you reboot computer, so check it hasn’t blocked Google Chrome.
  • Some third party software applications - firewalls and anti-virus programs - do not recognise Google Chrome and put an automatic block on it that you can manually override.
  • Malware can cause this error, so run your AV program to make sure there is no nasty little files on your computer that are blocking Chrome from working as it should. Some types of malware try to redirect your browser to their site and are not configured for Chrome. Chrome is actually pretty good at blocking such things.
  • Go into Internet options ~> Connections ~> settings. Make sure the ‘use a proxy’ box is unticked. Save and exit and retry to access Chrome. This last one has worked for a lot of people.

How to fix error message in Google Chrome - this web page is not available

UPDATE: (a few days after publishing)

Google Chrome must have read my hub! I got a message when trying to access the web that I have not seen before. Once yet Orange let me down and dropped my connection mid surf, and Chrome must have been listening (they missed out "Ya daftie!" but maybe they saved that for Orange!)

This happens to me all the time. I just either click on reload or refresh the page and the page pops up right away. But now that I know you can fix this under internet options I will try this...Thanks so much!

Izzy. Brilliant. I often get the message, "This web page is not available" and it drives me crazy!!!!

IzzyM 13 months ago

What gets me is not so much the page being unavailable, its the moving to a new address bit that bugs me! It's like they did a moonlight so I wouldn't find them again!

I get the same message as you did, and it's happening quite a bit in Chrome. Perhaps they should read your hub and implement some of the better messages when the connection is down and thank (and pay) you for helping them get Chrome to be more appreciative by its users. :)

Heheh! Pigs might fly first, but it's nice to think that they might listen!

Sorry Izzy, could not read this hub due to "This web page is not available" - have you gone to the party without me?

I feel your angst, and relate to it. My internet connection often disappears and I get "This web page is not available". I find that banging the desk and shouting does not help. Perhaps following your suggestions may help me.
